Breakthrough

This is from a pattern by Marlene King called Ecstasy, in Down Under Quilts, Issue 96, 2006. The colours I used are very different from what she used and I turned it on it's side because I like mine better this way. The top was hand pieced, but stayed unquilted until earlier this year. I really wanted to free motion quilt this one by machine, but didn't have the skills to do it well. Finally I took the plunge and it went much better than I anticipated. It was in our guild quilt show earlier this month. It's not a great photo, but you get the idea. It measures 40” by 34”.

Charlotte's in the Pumpkin Patch

I found the pumpkin fabric and just loved the whimsy of the pumpkins. I wanted to make a wallhanging that would work for Thanksgiving and Halloween. I love how pumpkins can come in different shapes and sizes (and colours!), and wanted to show some of that variety. I was stumped on the free motion quilting though, until I found Leah Day’s Free Motion Quilting Project site. When I saw her Pumpkin Patch design, I knew I had to try it. I also wanted a little more whimsy in the quilting so I added Cobwebs in the Corners and some Grandaddy Longlegs spiders in the border. With this, the title Charlotte’s in the Pumpking Patch just seemed à propos. Original design, 19” by 33”.

Memories of Australia

Living Around the World

My cousin met her husband-to-be while they were teaching in England. They married there, and had marriage celebrations in Seattle and in St. André, Québec. They then moved to Washington State, followed by Barrow, Alaska, and then Gisborne, New Zealand. With a whirlwind start like that, it was obvious to me that a Trip Around the World quilt should be their wedding gift. The top was finished in time for their wedding celebration in St. André in 2005. I presented it to them, as well as a family cookbook, but took it home to quilt it. It was the biggest quilt I'd ever made (95” by 95”), and I couldn’t figure out how to quilt it properly on my domestic machine. And they were in far-off places where they couldn’t have many things with them anyways so there didn't seem to be any rush to get it finished. Finally I bit the bullet and started quilting it. I got the centre crosshatch done without any problems and then was stumped on how to do the borders. I wanted to do some feathers, but didn’t know how. I practised on some other pieces until I felt comfortable tackling them on this big quilt. Voilà, c’est fini! Now, the next challenge will be to get it to them. Anyone heading to New Zealand?

Daniel's Quilt

This is my middle son's (he's four) first project. I purchased fusible web with a 4” grid on it and precut 4” squares of different colours of a line of fabric (couldn't tell you what the line is because it isn't listed on the selvage). Daniel then placed the squares of colour where he liked. I ironed them down and then sewed them together by rows and then by columns. He then picked the backing, border colours, quilting threads and machine quilting motifs. It was a fun and easy way to start teaching him about quilting and to practice my free motion quilting skills. He's very proud of his quilt and won't go to bed without it. Win-win! Size: 40.75" by 66.75”.
